Beginning Bookbinding: Pamphlets      

Date: August 26, 2023 

Time: 10 am - Noon

Have you ever wanted to make your own sketch pad or a simple journal? Come learn basic bookbinding techniques in our beginners workshop! In this class we will make several different styles of pamphlet notebooks. Tools and materials provided.

Coptic Style Binding

Date: September 9, 2023 

Time: 10 am - Noon

Fee: $65 (includes materials fee)

 

In this workshop, we will be making a coptic style book. You will learn how to sew multiple sections using the basic materials of board and paper. Coptic books are wonderful for sketching. The great benefit of these books is a flexible spine that allows you to open the book completely and it stays open while writing or drawing. They also look pretty cool. Tools and materials provided.

Fabric Lining for Bookbinding

Date: September 23, 2023

Time: 10 am - Noon

Fee: $90 (includes kit)

Make your own bookbinding cloth in this Fabric Lining for Bookbinding workshop. In this workshop, you will learn the techniques for lining fabric to use in your own bookbinding projects. We'll use two different adhesives and materials for lining and discuss when each type would be best to use. 

Bring your own cotton or cotton mix fabric and you will receive a fabric lining kit to work with.

Case Binding (New Case Books)

Date: October 14, 2023

Time: 10 am - 4 pm

Fee: $120 (includes materials fee)

 

Come learn the most common style of bookbinding used today: Case Binding. In this workshop you will be learning the art of bringing together a sewn text block with a seperately made case. Discover the secrets of building a case that fits perfectly around the text block that you have sewn. The end result will be a beautiful blank book to be used to your liking. Tools and materials provided.

This class is best suited for those who have taken our Pamplhet or Coptic Style Binding Workshop or have some bookbinding experience.

Miniature Bookbinding

Date: October 28, 2023

Enhance your collection with a mini masterpiece during our final class of the year! In this session, we'll craft a fully functional, adorably miniature leather-bound book. Crafting these mini books not only promotes sustainability by minimizing waste compared to standard-sized books but also opens up a world of possibilities. From charming Christmas tree ornaments to practical password keepers, these diminutive creations are versatile. They make delightful gifts for book enthusiasts and serve as elegant desk or shelf adornments. No matter how you choose to employ your mini book, we look forward to having you join us!

***Recommended parking is in the Smith & Beretania Municipal Parking below ground level. You can access the lot from Beretania Street, just past Nuʻuanu Avenue and before Smith Beretania Park. This is the most economical parking fee at $3 for the entire class and it will free you up from having to constantly run out to fill the parking meter on the street. This is a cash only parking garage.***
